Twins Blog: Give Buscher A Chance

But, if a Minnesota Twins fan blog has its way a fifth player would soon join Adam Everett (Houston), Brian Roberts (Baltimore), Jon Coutlangus (Cincinnati) and Marcus McBeth (Cincinnati) in the big leagues.
Twins 3B Nick Punto is batting just .212 with one homer and 12 RBI in 89 games in 2007. While Punto is a very good defensive third baseman, the position has become a black hole offensively. Punto regularly bats ninth in the lineup and provides little punch.
Well, twinsfanatnicks.blogspot.com made the following suggestion in an entry dated July 17 - call up former USC 3B Brian Buscher to the major leagues. Since being promoted to Triple-A Rochester of the International League earlier this season, Buscher is batting .308 (28-for-91) with five homers and 16 RBI in 28 games at the highest minor league level.
The blog described Buscher as possibly “the biggest surprise of the season in the Twins organization.”
However, Buscher has struggled lately at the plate with two hits in his last 19 at-bats. Before that, Buscher was red hot. Hopefully, he will snap the slump soon and earn a September promotion to the big leagues.
But as far as the Twing blog is concerned, he can’t do any worse than Punto. The authors wrote Punto’s “continued regular presence in the lineup is hurting the team.” In other words, he's become a liability.
Buscher started the 2007 season at Double-A New Britain of the Eastern League and played 63 games for the Rock Cats with a .308 batting average, seven homers and 37 RBI before moving up to Rochester.
Drafted in the third round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, Buscher was selected by Minnesota in the Rule V Draft this past off-season. The Twins blog hopes Buscher “has turned a corner and revitalized his fledgling career by latching on with a new organization.”
Based on Buscher’s offensive numbers and his “above-average defense,” the Twins blog noted that “(i)t would seem like the time is right to call him up and give him a shot at the bottom of the Twins’ lineup.”
Let’s hope the Twins organization heeds the advice.

South Carolina has four former players currently playing in the major leagues. A couple of others – pitcher Lee Gronkiewicz (Toronto) and infielder Kevin Melillo (Oakland) – had cups of coffee earlier this season before being sent back down to the minors.
