USC-Duquesne Baseball Blog - Game 2 (Sat)

6:55 - WE GO TO THE NINTH INNING. USC leads 10-2. Todd still pitching for USC. Strikeout for the first out. Another strikeout. That's four for Todd. DU is down to their last out. Single to second. Merrifield couldn't handle the smash up the middle. USC will improve to 7-2. DU will fall to 0-9. Strikeout. USC WINS 10-2.

6:45 - We go to the bottom of the 8th with USC leading 10-2. Todd gave up two hits and a run in the 8th. But he also had 2 K's. Richard Royal will PH for Disher. Nothing for USC in the inning.

:40 - DU has plated a run here in the 8th on a pair of singles and a groundout. There are 2 outs. Todd still pitching for USC. It's 10-2 USC. DU has 3 hits in the game.

6:30 - We're headed to the 8th with USC leading 10-1. Brandon Todd is the new pitcher for USC. This will be his second appearance. Bangs went 3 innings and should get his first career win.

6:20 - We're in the bottom of the 7th with USC still leading, 9-1. DU has made a pitching change. USC has runners at 1&3 with 1 out. Bangs pitched the top of the 7th for USC. It looks like he'll get credit for the victory. Darnell up. Faly to deep CF. Sac. fly for Darnell. USC leads 10-1.

6:05 - Mack singles with 1 out for his second hit of the day. Crisp up. He has 2 hits today. 1-4-3 DP. Crisp is finally retired. We go to the 7th with USC up, 9-1.

6:00 - We're in the top of the 6th. DU has a runner on secind with 1 out. HBP. bangs still pitching for USC. Runner steals third. Strikeout. Strikeout. Bangs has some nasty stuff right there. His ball brwaks about a foot and a half. We go to the bottom of the 6th with USC leading, 9-1.

5:50 - Darnell grounded into 1-6 FC. Smoak takes called strike three! Ouch. Disher up. P-4. Three outs. Three runs in the inning. USC leads 9-1 as we go to the top of the 6th.

5:45 - Merrifield easily steals 2nd. No throw from the catcher. Havens lines a single to RF. 2 runs score. It's 9-1 USC. Havens now has 21 RBI! Wow! Wingo gets hit again! He has 8 on the season. That had to hurt. Runners at 1&2, 0 outs. Darnell up.

5:40 - Infield single by Merrifield, Runners at 1&3, no outs for Havens. Here comes the DU coach. Pitching change. Havens is 1-for-3 today with a 2-run double. New Duke spitcher is a LHP.

5:35 - Home run to LF by DeAngelo Mack leading off the 5th! That's the first career HR for the Airport High grad. USC now leads 7-1. Single by Crisp. He has 2 singles and a walk today. He's now 4-for-10 on the seaosn. There's a stolen base by Crisp. Runner at second, no outs for Merrifield.

5:32 - Strikeout by Bangs ends the 5th. Good inning for him. He threw well. We go to the bottom of the 5th with USC up, 6-1.

5:30 - New pitcher for USC in the 5th. Parker Bangs pitching. Atwood can't get credit for the win becuase he didn't go at least 5 inn. 1-3 for the 1st out. Strikeout. Bangs looks good here. But there's walk.

5:20 - 1-out single by Smoak in the bottom of the 4th. X-3 (Foul out to 1B) by Disher. 2 outs now. Lail up. He's 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI. Another X-3. We go to the 5th with USC leading, 6-1.

5:17 - Here comes Ray Tanner. Conversation going on. Tanner keeps him in the game. Strike to the next batter. SF to RF. Run scores. Throw to 3rd. The ball gets past Darnell. Smoak is backing up. The runner tries to home! He's out by a mile and a half. Atwood backed up and threw the runner out. We go to the bottom of the 4th with USC ahead, 6-1.

5:15 - Atwood walks his 4th batter of the game to lead off the top of the 4th. There's a double to LF off the wall. DU has runners at 2&3 with no outs here. Atwood has struggled a little bit the past couple of innings.

5:10 - We're in the bottom of the third. USC has a runner at second with 2 outs. But Wingo K's for the final out. We go to the 4th with USC leading, 6-0.

5:05 - Crisp starts the bottom of the 3rd with a single to LF. He's reached base twice today on a walk and single. That's the 23rd hit for USC in the first 11 at-bats of the series. Merrifield F-8. Havens up.

5:00 - Atwood issued a 1-out walk to Duquesne in the top of the third but he got out of it with a P-1 and K. We go to the bottom of thr 3rd with USC ahead, 3-0. Duquesne has no hits. All 3 baserunners have come via the walk.

4:50 - Disher walks. Lail up again. USC bats around. Line Single to LF. Darnell and Smoak score. It's 6-0 USC. Still 2 outs in the bottom of the 2nd. Mack up. 1-3 grundout. Mack made 2 outs in the inning. Big inning for the Gamecocks. It's 6-0 USC as we go to the top of the third.

4:45 - Darnell bouncews a single throughthe hole. Havens scores from 2B. It's 4-0 USC. Smoak HBP. That's the 17th time a USC has been hit by a pitch. Disher up. He needs a hit badly. Long foul. Here comes the DU coach. I think he's telling his pitcher not to throw any fastballs to Disher.

4:42 - Havens lofts a fly to left. The wind catches it. The LF loses the ball! It falls for a double! 2 runs score. Havens has 2 more RBI. Give him 19 on the season. Wingo is up. SF to CF. Merrifield scores. USC leads 3-0.

4:40 - Crisp walks. Man, the wind is gusting to left. Merrifield is up. Runners on 1&2, 1 out. Bloop single to RF. Bases are loaded for Havens.

4:35 - Lail leads off the 2nd with a line double to left. That's his team-leading sixth 2B of the season. But Mack, back in the starting lineup again today, flies to short CF. Lail stays. Crisp open.

4:30 - Atwood fell behind the next hitter 2-0 but has recovered with consecutiuve strikes. Strike three. Swing and a miss. 2 outs. Good comeback by Atwood. 4-3 for third out. Atwood gets out of it. We go to the bottom of the 2nd, 0-0.

4:25 - Duquesne has their first baserunner of the game. 1-out BB in the top of the 2nd. Anotehr walk by Atwood. Runners at 1&2, 1 out. Here comes Calvi to try and settle Atwood down.

4:15 - Darnell lines out to RF. Good at-bat and he made good contact, but with the wind blowing to LF, everything to RF is going to get knocked down by the wind. There's a single up the middle by Smoak. The ball was knocked down by the Duq. 2B. Runners on 1&2, 2 outs. Disher is up. Check swing on 1-2 pitch. Close. Disher has a new life. Strike three. End of the 1st, 0-0.

4:10 - Duquesne's starting pitcher has a 27.00 ERA in 2 starts. Havens grunds out 1-3 for the first out in the bottom of the first. Wingo draws a walk. Close call on ball four. Wingo has walked 9 times and has taken over the team lead in that category. Darnell is up.

4:05 - Another 4-3 groundout for the third out. We go to the bottom of the 1st, 0-0. 1-2-3 top of the first for Atwood.

4:02 - We're underway. Strikeout on the first batter. Nice changeup on the outside by Atwood. Soft 4-3 groundout for the second out. Nice play by Wingo to rush in and make the play. Two outs in the top of the first.

4:00 - We're almost ready for baseball. USC has taken the field for the national anthem. Will Atwood is going through his final waemups. We're moments away from the first pitch.

3:40 - USC has completed their infield practice and Duquesne is going through their drills right now. Here is USC's starting lineup for today's game:

Havens - 6
Wingo - 4
Darnell - 5
Smoak - 3
Disher - 2
Lail - 9
Mack - 7
Crisp - DH
Merrifield - 8

Atwood - P

The only change from last night's lineup is Enders is out, Disher is catching and Andrew Crisp will be the DH. This might be the first time Crisp has started a game as the DH. He didn't last year.

3:30 - We're here at Sarge Frye Field for today's baseball game between USC and Duquesne. It's the second game of this three-game series. USC won last night's opener, 15-4. It's windy and chilly at SFF today. The wins is howling out to LF. If you're planning to come out for the game, bring a winter jacket. The wind chill could be down into the 40's by the time this one is over.
