SCOTT HOOD's

Spurrier Call-In Show Blog

posted by Scott Hood, Thursday, October 02, 2008

Steve Spurrier conducted his weekly call-in radio show on Thursday night in anticipation of the Ole Miss game on Saturday afternoon.

SIXTH SEGMENT:
Garrett Anderson will be one of the captains for Saturday's game.

SOS was asked about using the I-formation. He said it was good for a power running team.

SOS said some college football experts believe the "spread offense" is fading as an offense of choice because defenses know how to defend it now. SOS said USC has done a much better job defending the spread this year than last year.

FIFTH SEGMENT:
7:45 - SOS said USC may use some new formations this week.

SOS said the problems on offense are related to the entire team. No unit stands out

THIRD AND FOURTH SEGMENTS:
7:40 - Spurrier was asked about Tyrone Nix, the Ole Miss DC. SOS said he was happy for Nix. It worked out for everybody. He said Ole Miss has some new wrinkles defensively.

SOS again voiced his opposition to the 40-second clock.

SOS was asked about redshirting McKinley. He said that's not an option becuase KM does not want to do that. He wants to go pro next year.

SOS said he was recruited by Ole Miss and almost went there.

SOS was asked about changing assistant coaches. He said he will change if he feels it isn't working.

SECOND SEGMENT:
7:20 - Ole Miss had a big win over Florida last Saturday. Will it have an effect on this week’s game? SOS said we’ll find out on Saturday.

USC “hasn’t peaked” on offense. SOS noted USC leads the SEC in first downs but hasn’t been scoring.

The first caller of the night asked about Brian Maddox. USC has four RB’s. Brian is “doing okay.” The other RB’s made more yards last week.

Bobby Wallace has earned more playing time.

The second caller asked about Patrick DiMarco. USC tried a middle screen for him last week but the play wasn’t blocked properly.

OPENING SEGMENT:
7:10 - Chris Smelley will start at QB. Knowledge of the offense was the difference between him and Garcia. SOS hopes Smelley will have a great game and there will be no need to substitute.

Jason Barnes will start at "split end" SOS said he looks a little like Sidney Rice. He is developing into a good wide receiver.

Mike Davis will start at RB.

SOS is still proud of the fact USC has the No. 1 defense in the country

Kenny McKinley is “a lot better.” He "ran around" this week. It will be a game-time decision for McKinley. Spurrier said it reminded him of the NFL. USC can suit up 70 guys. He will likely play, but how much remains to be seen.

6:50 - We're awaiting the start of the show. Obviously, the main topic of conversation will be the choice of Chris Smelley as the starting QB. McKinley will be a game-time decision.
