Spurrier's Call-In Show Blog - Thur. 9/17

posted by Scott Hood, Thursday, September 17, 2009

Steve Spurrier held his weekly call-in radio show on Thursday night from Wild Wings Cafe in the Vista. Here's a summary of what he said:

7:00 - We're awaiting the start of the show.

FIRST SEGMENT: Four-game homestand. Guys are excited. This will be the payoff for all the hard work over the summer. Players like Jarvis Giles are still excited. Lots of work inside the stadium. They have put the names of the recordholders all over the stadium. Field is in beautiful shape. Eric Hyman and his staff did a great job withthe stadium. Spurrier said fans won't recognize the stadium.

SECOND SEGMENT: Players have practiced well this week after the heartbreaking loss at Georgia. Team has "filed it." It's time to think about FAU. They've won 2 straight bowl games. Spurrier wants offense to practice towards perfection. Wants team to practice better. "New Carolina" comes from effort to get players to play all-out, every play. That's the goal.

Use rollout pass in the red zone? USC hasn't been great with them. No question USC hasn't been very good in the red zone. USC was pretty good in the red zone last season scoring TDs. USC works on red zone offense a lot. It comes down to taking advantage of opportunities. Team is capable of scoring TD. Tori Gurley is weapon. He has had an opportunity for 6 TDs so far but three have been called back and two bounced off his hands.

FOURTH SEGMENT: Spurrier was asked about USC's cornerbacks. He said USC has pretty good cover cornerbacks.

FIFTH SEGMENT: More confidence shown by the players? What did Spurrier say to the special teams and what will USC improve? Spurrier said overall effort level wasn't as good as first game. Team doesn't have a lot of seniors. No unrealistic expectations. Winning record and win to a bowl game. Is offense capable of scoring 30+ points a game each week? Offensive line had trouble blocking fast D-lines. USC hasn't running the ball nearly as well as they hoped. Garcia is USC's leading rusher.

Question about D-Line. Ajiboye has been able to practice. He will be eligible to return for Ole Miss game. Kyle Nunn returns as well. Could get a look at tackle for OM game.

SIXTH SEGMENT: Caller questioned officials in UGA game. Spurrier pointed out UGA had more penalties. SOS said he was very excited about playing first game at W-B Stadium. Fairgrounds parking lot is better. Lots of good things going on.
