SCOTT HOOD's

Spurrier Call-In Show Blog

posted by Scott Hood, Thursday, October 22, 2009

Steve Spurrier held his weekly call-in radio show on Thursday night. Here is a summary of what he said:

FIRST SEGMENT: Spurrier has not arrived at Wild Wings yet. Fans are reminded to arrive at W-B Stadium early on Saturday because of the State Fair. Parking coule be difficult for those who linger.

SECOND SEGMENT: Spurrier has arrived. USC is very healthy right now. WR Moe Brown has a concussion and won't play. Possibly next week at Tennessee. Akeem Auguste has served his 3-game suspension and will play this week. USC has 7 turnovers in last two years v. Vanderbilt. USC has been outplayed and outcoached last 2 years vt Vandy. USC is looking forward to the game. Homecoming. Big crowd is expected. Garcia is OK. He was just "bumped in the leg" at Alabama. Senior leadership has been very good. 1969 and 1984 teams will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies.

THIRD SEGMENT: Will USC keep running the fade? Alshon Jeffery is a lot like Sidney. But Jeffery needs to learn to battle for the ball. Alabama DB's outfought him for the ball. Sidney should have stayed one more year at USC. Alabama changed up its defense but USC didn't chaneg the play. Hopefully, USC is able to do that in the future. USC missed a lot of tackles in last game. USC's run defense has to get better. Vandy will test USC's run defense. Vandy want to run the ball, play defense and excel on special teams. Why can't USC stop the Wildcat? Heck, Alabama was running pretty well before using the W/cat. USC could have won if they had been successful on offense. But they struggled. Garcia must play better. Hopefully, Garcia will start playing like Peyton Manning and change the play at the LOS.

FOURTH SEGMENT: USC must play smart to beat Vandy. They don't make mistakes. USC had only 1 turnover last week v. Alabama. Had opportunities to score TD's. Recruiting is going well. Very excited. But USC is trying to maximize this season. What is the zone blitz? Garcia doesn't need to chack out of every play. You don't need great passing to win. Great defense will help too.

FIFTH SEGMENT How about bringing both tackles together and putting TE on other side? USC has that play and hasn;t used the formation occasdionally. Quick segment.

SIXTH SEGMENT: Ryan Succop has done well in freshmen year. Vandy has played better than USC last 2 years. Stopping Vandy's run is key. Must score TD's in the red zone.
