SCOTT HOOD's

Spurrier Call-In Show Blog

posted by Scott Hood, Thursday, October 29, 2009

Steve Spurrier held his weekly call-in show on Thur. night. Here is a summary of what he said:

FIRST SEGMENT: Tennessee was a good team defensively last year. Crompton playing better this year. Hardesty is a solid RB. USC has to play better offensively. Good test. Is USC ready for a big road game? UT is throwing the ball a little bit less. Alshon Jeffery practiced on Thur. Had a 1-day stomach virus. Hopefully, should be good as new. Moe Brown has been cleared to play. USC plays some tough teams down the stretch. Tenn and Arkansas are similar teams. Both teams had road opportunities recently to beat top-ranked teams.

SECOND SEGMENT: Memories at Neyland Stadium? Didn't get to play UT when he was QB at UF. Best memory at Neyland was win in early 1980's when SOS was OC at Duke. 25-24 win. SOS has led 3 different teams to wins in Knoxville. How are other QB's developing? Reid gets a lot of snaps in practice. Throws a beautiful pass. But must get more knowledgeable about offenses and defenses. Helpful for Garcia that no one is competing for No. 1 QB. QB's been clsoe in last couple of years. Will ever be satisfied with Garcia? When he keeps his legs active, he's a pretty good passer. Lorenzo Ward at Wild Wings Cafe tonight.

THIRD SEGMENT: What about the O-Line? They're doing OK. We wish they'd play more physical at LOS. Coaches challenge them every week to play tougher. What s the best route to Knoxville?

FOURTH SEGMENT: What about special teams? USC is OK except for kickoff coverage. KOff coverage has struggled. USC is Top 10 nationally in pass defense. But struggling a bit in stopping the run. Lorenzo Ward said working at USC has been great. Best place his family has lived. Holloman and Gilmore have played well. Both proved they could play in the spring. USC has to tackle Hardesty low and get him on the ground. Crompton was running the West Coast offense early on but they have changed up to bootlegs off the run and playing ball control offense. Offense is more simple and Crompton is benefitting.

FIFTH SEGMENT: When do you go for 1 or 2 after TD? Most coaches wait until 4Q before going for two. Spurrier used to go for 2 earlier in the game but usually he wished he hadn't. Tennesse is a pretty good rival. Vols used to come into SC and grab top prospects, Not anymore. Looking forward to playing at UT. Home field advantage is not as significant as people think. USC was fortunate in reviews last week v. Vandy. USC could have played a lot better. Winning takes good fortune to win today. Teams are very close nowadays. USC is No. 2 in SEC in passing offense.

SIXTH SEGMENT: USC must avoid turnovers and play well to win.
