Latest SEC Bowl Projections - Dec. 1 (3 PM)
posted by Scott Hood, Tuesday, December 01, 2009
The outspoken Outback Bowl President and CEO surprised everybody around the SEC – actually, stunned might be a better word - Tuesday afternoon when he invited Auburn to play in the New Year’s Day Bowl in Tampa.
In doing so, he bypassed Tennessee, the school nearly everybody presumed would wind up in Tampa after the Vols finished up the first season under head coach Lane Kiffin with a 7-5 record.
Auburn will become the first SEC West team to appear in the Outback Bowl since 1997. According to reports, the Tigers snatched the bid away from Tennessee because they promised to sell more tickets.
Where does Tennessee land? Reports out of Knoxville Tuesday afternoon said the Vols are likely headed to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta to face an ACC team.
But, in the event Chick-fil-A Bowl officials elect to go with Georgia, Tennessee, clearly blindsided by the Outback Bowl’s decision, will fall no farther than the Music City Bowl in Nashville.
If the Chick-fil-A Bowl, as expected, invites Tennessee, Kentucky will remain the top choice of the Music City Bowl. With Arkansas expected to go to the Liberty Bowl, that means Georgia could slip as far as the Independence Bowl in Shreveport.
Right now, the Outback Bowl’s decision to go with Auburn shouldn’t change anything as far as South Carolina is concerned. I still expect the Gamecocks to play in the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham.
A USC official confirmed to me Tuesday afternoon that nothing has changed from the Gamecocks’ perspective.
Based on Tuesday’s surprising developments, here are my latest SEC bowl projections:
BCS Championship Game: Alabama
Sugar (BCS): Florida
Capital One: LSU
Outback: Auburn (Confirmed)
Cotton: Ole Miss (Confirmed)
Chick-Fil-A: Tennessee
Music City: Kentucky
Liberty: Arkansas
Independence: Georgia
Papajohns.com: USC

You can always count on Jim McVay to do the unpredictable.
